Gaiam Travel Yoga Mat | A Lightweight Easy-To-Clean Alternative To Traditional Mats

gaim yoga travel mat

I've been a yoga teacher for years, so I usually have between 5 and 7 mats in my arsenal of yoga equipment. That may seem excessive, but the truth is that if you do a lot of yoga, you need different kinds of mats for different kinds of reasons. This mat is specifically designed to be lightweight and ultra-portable.

The material on this mat is really unique. One side is grippy, while the other has a towel-like texture, but with a very short nap. The great thing about this is that it allows one side to cling to the ground but it is soft against your hands.

This softness, however, won't work for everyone. It is more difficult to hold postures on a soft surface than on a sticky one, which is why so many yoga mats are called "sticky mats". It's great, though, for people who tend to sweat a lot, as it is somewhat absorbent and never gets slippery.

The travel mat is also very thin, which makes it easy to fold up and throw in a bag. Folded, it's definitely small enough to fit into a gallon-sized ziploc bag, which makes packing it super easy. It's also machine-washable and dryable, so you never have to worry about taking it out and throwing it on the ground.

One of the drawbacks of the mat is its lack of padding. It's perfect for grass or sand, but terrible on concrete, as it just doesn't offer enough protection for your joints. This mat simply isn't versatile enough to be your one and only mat, but if you're a traveler, it's the most convenient option I've found thus far. And at under $25, you really can't go wrong on the price.

Yoga Poses To Relieve Neck & Shoulder Pain | 4 Stiffness Allieviating Solutions

eagle arms yoga

Eagle Arms

Everyone knows that yoga is good for relieving the minor aches and pains of daily life, but which poses should you choose to target that terrible "I've been sitting at the computer all day and my neck and shoulders are like boulders" feeling? Try these.

Eagle Arms

This pose, which is shown above, is a great shoulder opener. It helps relax the upper traps (sides of your neck) and stretches out the area between your shoulder blades.

  • To get into the pose, stretch your arms out at shoulder level, cross your right arm under your left, and bend your elbows and try to bring your hands into a prayer position. If you can't, that's okay, you can just take a hold of your opposite wrist. Since it's a shoulder opener, the hand position is relatively arbitrary.
  • With every inhalation, lift your arms a little higher, and with every exhalation, move your forearms towards the ground. Basically, you are lifting your arms and increasing the angle. You should feel the stretch throughout your shoulders.
  • Switch sides.

Dolphin Pose

Dolphin Pose

Dolphin pose is basically a modified Down Dog. It helps strengthen and stretch the shoulders.

  • To get into the pose, start from dog down, which is an inverted-v position. Your hips should move towards the ceiling, your heels towards the ground, and you should have a wide, comfortable hand position.
  • Lower your forearms, remembering to keep pressing back with your hips and down with your heels.
  • Return to Down Dog and repeat.

Side Bending Neck Stretches

Side Bending Neck Strech

Neck stretches are an easy way to relieve tension when you can't get into a complicated yoga routine.

  • Sit with your shoulders relaxed. Let your right ear drop down towards your right shoulder.
  • After a few moments, use your right hand as a gentle weight. Allow the left side of your neck to relax.
  • Bring your head back up to neutral and repeat on the left side.

Shoulder Rolls

Shoulder Rolls

Shoulder rolls are a simple way to loosen up the muscles of your neck and shoulders that can be done anywhere.

  • Let your arms hang by your sides. Being mindful not to overstretch, roll your shoulders in circles towards the back. First move them up, then back, then down, then forward. Try to do this slowly and calm your breathing.
  • Repeat in the other direction.

Asthma And Allergy Prevention By Childhood Exposure to Dust And Dirt

asthma

A recent study by The New England Journal of Medicine suggests that exposure to the microbes found on farms in beneficial in preventing childhood asthma and allergies such as hay fever. Most people assume that the symptoms associated with these diseases are caused by such exposure, but in actuality, incidence of asthma and allergy symptoms is reduced by the microbes and fungi found in rural environments.

Previous studies done by the University of San Diego back up these claims. The idea behind the research is that children who are exposed to microbes and fungi build up natural immunities that prevent them from experiencing these ailments. Individuals who are not exposed to such bacteria early in life do not develop these immunities and are therefore more likely to suffer ill effects to later exposure.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any documented substitute, in terms of prevention, to this early exposure, and children who grow up in suburban and urban environments will naturally be more likely to suffer from asthma and allergies as adults, although some research suggests that symptoms can be reduced by the use of probiotics or nasal irrigation.

This video explains the benefits of nasal irrigation:

Foods Rich in Vitamin E | Benefits: Skin Healing Antioxidant

Wheatgrass

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes the free radicals in the body that cause cell and tissue damage.

Scientific studies have shown it:

  • helps your body heal wounds and promotes proper blood clotting.
  • is good for the skin as a result of its wound healing properties.
  • can help reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome
  • can aid in the healing of some types of breast disease, but this has been disputed.

The video below explains the benefits of Vitamin E for this skin:

There are two types of antioxidants: fat soluble and water soluble. Vitamin E is of the latter variety. That means that it is stored in your body for an extended period of time. On the plus side, that means that your body can hold onto and use it when it needs it, but because it builds up in the body, you can also have too much vitamin E.

The average female needs about 8 milligrams a day, and the average male needs about 10, although the amount recommended varies slightly depending on the organization recommending it. Further details on dosage are below.

Natural Food Sources

Vitamin E can be found in:

  • whole grain products such as wheat germ
  • margarine and vegetable oils
  • avocados
  • egg yolks
  • peanut butter
  • nuts
  • liver
  • some of the darker, leafier greens also have vitamin E.
  • Wheatgrass is one of the best green sources of vitamin E, and an ounce of its juice has 880 micrograms.

Downsides, Side Effects & Dosage?

There are no negative effects of taking vitamin E within the recommended amounts. The Institue of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board recommends the following daily intake:

Infants
0 to 6 months: 4 mg/day
7 to 12 months: 5 mg/day

Children
- 1 to 3 years: 6 mg/day
- 4 to 8 years: 7 mg/day
- 9 to 13 years: 11 mg/day

Adolescents and Adults
- 14 and older: 15 mg/day

However, taken in larger amounts, it could lead to toxicity, nausea, digestive tract problems, and possible liver complications. Studies have shown that taking Vitamin E in doses over 400 IU (266.67 mg) can lead to early death.

Generally dietary supplementation is NOT recommended as enough Vitamin E is found in natural food sources. Creams however can be useful for improving the skin and are considered safe.

Fitter First DuraBall PRO | Large Exercise Ball & Office Chair for Core Stability, Sit Ups & Workout

Fitter-First-DuraBall-PRO-Exercise-Ball

A lot of people use exercise balls at the gym to stretch or strengthen their core. But exercise balls can also be used as office chairs. Sounds kind of weird, I know. But sitting is actually really hard on the body, and a lot of us have extra aches and pains as a result of time spent at computer desks.

Using an an exercise ball forces your body to remain active while you sit, which decreases muscle fatigue. It also forces you to use your abdominal muscles while you sit, instead of slumping, which is damaging to your lower back. Fitter First is a well-established maker of exercise equipment. They claim that their DuraBall PRO is sturdier than other balls on the market, and they're right.

The Fitter brand of exercise balls are more expensive than the ones you will find at big box stores. The 75 cm size is $89.95, not including shipping. Is the brand name worth the price? Yes, in this case, it is. The reason the Fitter balls cost more is that the rubber used is much thicker than the rubber used to make cheaper balls. That means that not only will it hold more weight safely, but it also won't puncture as easily as other balls.

Other than the thickness of the rubber, the Fitter balls don't seem to be drastically different than other exercise balls, but I have yet to find a comparable one at a lower price. I personally went through two exercise balls before I invested in  Fitter ball, both of which I lost to staples. The colors are a little intense, though, so unless you have an office that coordinates with purple, blue, or silver, you're just going to have to get used to it.

Studies Say That Vibrating Platforms Can Improve Athletic Performance

If you've seen one of these machines at your gym lately and wondered what the heck it was, well, I'm about to tell you. It's a vibrating platform. You don't jump on it, do squats on it or lift it. You just stand there, hold the handles, and it vibrates you. If it sounds suspiciously not like exercise to you, you're right to be suspicious. It's not exercise. But exercise physiologists claim that it can improve your athletic performance, nonetheless.

A study done at California State University shows that athletic performance is enhance for a short period of time after using the machine. How long? Researchers aren't really sure yet, but it's safe to say that it won't help you run a marathon. The effects last only a few minutes.

Another problem with the research is that no one knows why, exactly, it works. Scientists hypothesize that it mimics the effect of doing an easier task after a more difficult one. If, for example, you lifted a twenty-pound weight, a ten pound weight would seem easier to lift afterwards. To be honest, I'm not sure I really understand the logic behind the research. If something seems easier, does it also feel easier to the body? Apparently so.

Another problem is that there's no consensus on how fast the vibrations should be, or what direction they should move in, so there's a great deal of difference between the vibrating platforms being produced. No doubt there will soon be a (highly ineffective) home version being sold on late night TV. In any case, athletes such as Serena Williams are reported to use these vibrating machines with solid results, and the research shows that they can be useful.

New Research Suggests That Kids With ADHD Are More Likely To Have Other Problems

About 4 million children in America aged 6-17 have ADHD, and new research suggests that children with ADHD are more likely to suffer from other physical and emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, behavior disorders, learning disorders, and epilepsy. This new research comes from a study done of 62,000 at the University of Los Angeles in 2007.

The interesting thing about this study is not simply that children with ADHD were more likely to have other complicating problems, but that they were more likely to have more than three other significant problems.  For example, a child with ADHD is more likely to also have conduct problems, learning disabilities, and anxiety than a child without ADHD.

These figures increase dramatically when you take into the socioeconomic circumstances of a child's home. Children from low income backgrounds were 40% more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, and of those, 30% have been diagnosed with three or more other complications. So, what accounts for the increase amongst less affluent children? Researchers aren't sure.

There is no causal, physiological link between ADHD and the other problems noted, and neither is there a strong causal link between ADHD and poverty. These results, therefore, have to be interpreted holistically and socially, as there is no scientific reason behind the discrepancies. Still, researchers are trying to decipher the results.

Susanna Visser, the lead epidemiologist for the Child Development Studies Team in the National Center for Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the CDC in Atlanta, told WebMD that "children who are low-birth weight or preterm are more likely to have ADHD and other behavioral problems,” she says. “Children exposed prenatally to tobacco are also more likely to have all of these conditions.”

Are High Protein Diets Really Good For You?

You've probably heard that high protein diets are a healthy way to lose weight. Popular plans such as the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet both recommend that dieters consumer high amounts of protein and extremely low amounts of carbs. But is this a fad that will fall by the wayside or good medical advice?

How Much Protein Do You Need In A Day? Is More Better?
According to research, adults should consume about .8 grams of protein for every pound of body weight. That means that a 150 pound person should consume about 54 grams of protein a day. Most Americans consume more than is necessary. So, then, why are we so fat? Because we also consume more carbohydrates and fats than we need in a day, which means that all told, we are consuming far more calories than are necessary to maintain a healthy body weight.

The Journal of Nutrition did a study of laboratory rats, in which they were fed different amounts of protein for fifteen weeks. The rats that ate the highest amounts of protein were found, in the end, to have the highest levels of antioxidants, as well, which led to the conclusion that consuming large amounts of protein can, in fact, be healthy. Unfortunately, the maximum amount of protein that humans can consume without adverse effects is not known.

What's Wrong With Eating A Lot Of Protein?
In and of itself, consuming a high protein diet doesn't seem to be problematic, so long as you don't have any kidney or liver disease that will interfere will how your body metabolizes protein. The real problem occurs when dieters follow high protein diets that are also high in fat and don't contain enough fiber. While the human body seems to be able to utilize high amounts of protein, diets that are high in fat are considered unhealthy across the board. And while most people don't need as many carbohydrates as they actually consume, your body does need the fiber found in whole grain foods and fruits in order to digest properly. Plus, many nutrients found in vegetables, particularly dark green ones, simply aren't found in non-vegetable sources.

Eating too much protein, however, in the amounts that diets such as Atkins recommend, helps lose weight by inducing a false ketonic, or starvation state. This means that because you aren't consuming any actual sugars, your body starts burning fat to convert it into sugar. This is an extremely unhealthy way to lose weight. Too much protein, unfortunately, can be a relative thing. Athletes and other people who have high energy lifestyles can consume more protein without adverse effects than others.

How Do I Eat A Healthy High Protein Diet?
The biggest trick to losing weight is consuming fewer calories. No matter what form the calories come in; fat, protein, or carb, you will not lose weight if you consume more calories than your body needs for energy. It's a simple math equation. As far as protein goes, it's probably healthy to eat up to 50% of your daily calories in protein, which is 154 grams in a 1,500 calorie a day diet, for a short period of time, as long as it's okay-ed by your doctor. In the long term, eating up to 130 grams of protein per day (on a 1,500 calorie a day diet) is probably not going to hurt you.

What’s Apple Cider Vinegar Really Good For? A Guide

Apple Cider Vinegar is something of a folk remedy. Proponents of it claim that when ingested it can reduce cholesterol and help remove toxins from the body. Rumor has it that it is a nutrient-rich concentrate, and will aid in digestion and weight control. It is claimed that soaking in a hot tub of ACV will cleanse the skin and and relieve aches and pains related to injuries and arthritis. It's even used as a natural pesticide.

The Truth About Apple Cider Vinegar
ACV is a relatively typical vinegar made from apple cider. Because it is fermented, it is highly acidic. It is this acidity that is supposed to help reduce cholesterol, the reasoning being that after consuming fatty meats, people naturally crave high acid foods that will help break down fats. While it may be true that people crave high acid foods in these moments, there is no proof to back up the claim that AVC actually reduces cholesterol levels.

In addition, claims that AVC is nutrient-rich are completely bogus. When analyzed, ACv contains trace amounts of iron, calcium, magnesium, or any other mineral. It contains a mere 15 mg of potassium, far less than your average sports drink or the whopping 450 mg contained in a banana. There are no amino acids, vitamins or fiber in ACV, and less than one carbohydrate, which makes it basically neutral as a supplement.

The Arthritis Foundation calls ACV a harmless, but ineffective treatment for arthritis. Soaking in a hot bath may soothe aches and pains, but chances are good that any benefits gained by adding ACV are negligible. The high acidity may, however, act as a skin tonic, and it can help exfoliate dead skin in a gentle, non-abrasive way.

What AVC Is Actually Good For
Salads. Apple Cider Vinegar makes a great salad dressing. The unique taste makes it perfect for dressing summer salads with dark greens and sweet fruits. It's not any better worse for you than other vinegars, except that it is usually unpasteurized, which means that it can breed bacteria such as e coli.

Apple Cider Vinegar can also be used for cleaning, although white vinegar might be a better choice for this, as the smell evaporates more quickly. It can make a great fly trap, though. If you place a dish of it in an area with a lot of flies or fruit flies, they will be attracted to the sweet smell, fly into the ACV, and drown. So, if you have a fruit fly problem, ACV may be a great remedy for you, but other than that, it has relatively few health benefits.

What’s Up With Acai?

Acai is everywhere. It's in juices, smoothies, and supplements. Rumored benefits include everything from weight loss to increased longevity. So, what exactly is this magical acai and what can it actually do for you?

Acai is a berry native to South and Central America. It contains anthocyanins, which are substances found in blue fruits such as blueberries and blackberries. The name "anthocyanin" actually means blue fruit. It is also high in flavanoids, which, like anthocyanins, are anti-oxidants. It is a relative of the blueberry.

Anthocyanins and flavanoids help neutralize free radicals, which can aid the immune system and may interfere with the aging process. Eating a diet high in antioxidants is definitely healthy, and there is solid scientific research to back up claims that it can bolster your health and help aid in the prevention of diseases such as heart disease and cancer. However, research is still ongoing, and no specific claims about the efficacy of antioxidants can be made.

Also, there is no evidence to support claims that Acai, in particular, has any properties different from other foods high in antioxidants. While there's no doubt that Acai is good for you, it may not be any better for you than blueberries or cranberries, and because it is usually imported, it can be a lot more expensive than fruits that are domestically available.

There is also no evidence to support claims that it assists in weight loss. Eating a diet high in berries could help lead to weight loss in some people, but not because of any particular magical properties of the fruits themselves. Blue fruits, in particular, tend to be lower in sugar than other fruits, and therefore lower in calories. Reducing your caloric intake is a great way to assist weight loss, and eating a lot of acai can help you do that, provided that you aren't drinking it in high sugar juice blends. The seed of the acai berry is also high in antioxidants, which makes its oil a great alternative to other tropical oils when it comes to cosmetic uses.

Basically, acai is definitely good for you, but all berries are. If you like the taste of it and can afford to buy it, there's no reason not to include it as a major part of your diet, but there's also no reason to jump on the acai fad train, either.
