What Plyometrics Means
Plyometrics is a way of doing exercise in short, powerful bursts. The idea is to stimulate the nervous system in an intensely cardiovascular way in order to improve performance and endurance. The fitness science behind it is based on the idea that loading and contracting your muscles in rapid sequence enhances muscle elasticity. This is a different idea than lifting weights, for example, in which a muscle is loaded and contracted slowly. The idea is to create more powerful, but also more usable muscle tissue.

Do Plyometrics Work?
The research backing up the benefits of plyometrics is strong. Plyometric training is particularly useful in increasing performance in high-intensity sports like football, volleyball, and rugby. Gyms are starting to catch on to what used to be a mostly sports-only training technique because plyos can also tone you up much quicker and more dramatically than a traditional gym program.

How do you do Plyometrics?
You really need to consult a fitness professional in order to introduce plyometrics into your fitness regimen. Because plyos are high impact, and high intensity, it's important to learn proper alignment. A plyometric program will include a lot of squatting, running, and jumping at a quick pace in rapid succession. In order to protect the joints, it should never be done on hard surfaces.

Review: Herbalife Healthy Meal Nutritional Shake Mix

Herbalife is one of those companies that you might recognize the logo of, even if you've never tried any of their products. This is doubtlessly because of their corporate sponsorship of sports teams and athletes. The California-based company's logo looks a little bit like a pot leaf, and combined with the name, you may wonder what, exactly, the company is selling.

Herbalife produces and distributes a line of natural, but not organic, dietary supplements and nutrition products. One their top sellers is part of their Formula 1 Line: The Healthy Meal Nutritional Shake Mix. It retails for $34.40. The canister includes enough mix to make 30 shakes with milk or soymilk.

Like many nutritional shakes on the market, Healthy Meal is meant as a meal replacement. It contains 24 vitamins and minerals in amounts equal to 8%-20% of the daily recommended intake. It has 9 grams of protein (without the milk) and 90 calories, which makes it a very low calorie alternative to most meals. But, is there anything magical about it? What makes it different than other shakes on the market?

Honestly, there's not much difference between this shake and other popular shakes. Some have more protein, some have less, and the same goes for the other nutritional benefits. But, unlike other shakes, it actually tastes good. I actually looked forward to drinking this shake every day, unlike others that I have tried. I drank the shake every morning as a breakfast replacement for 90 days, and sometimes twice a day if I didn't feel like cooking, and I lost 13 pounds in that period.

These results are pretty impressive, but they were combined with intense cardiovascular workouts three times per week and almost daily yoga. At the end of the 90 days, I had definitely decreased my body fat significantly and felt healthier and stronger. So, yes, the Herbalife shake can and will work, but like any diet and exercise program, it requires dedication and commitment on your part.

The caveat to the Herbalife program is that you can't just run out to a store and buy it. It's only available through independent Herbalife distributors. Fortunately, these are pretty easy to come by. The other drawback is the price. At $1.15 per shake, the Herbalife shake is more expensive than a lot of others on the market. Personally, I find the taste preferable, which is enough to make me cough up the extra dough.

The Verdict
Herbalife Healthy Meal tastes better than other products, but it is not significantly more nutritious than others, nor is it organic or soy-free (if you have allergies). If you stick to the recommended program, it can yield impressive results, but don't expect it to be a magic bullet.

Because juice fasting usually requires a structured eating (er, drinking) schedule, you may find that you are able to fill your desire to smoke or drink alcohol with this new habit.

Juice fasting may have an effect on your immune system, but this is not due to any magical juice properties, it's just a side benefit of some of the other benefits. Obesity effects your body's ability to fight off disease, so if you lose that extra weight, you'll be better off. Same goes if you quit smoking or drinking or reduce your level of toxicity in general. Many people are also of the opinion that "shocking" the immune system by changing your habits dramatically creates an increased immune response. This is true, but it can also "shock" your system right out of balance if your body is depleted.

The Verdict?
Juice fasting can be beneficial, but it's no magic bullet. Stay away from pricey products that promise dramatic results. 5 Simple Yoga Stretches You Can Do Anywhere and Anytime

It seems that life is full of uncomfortable situations and times when we just crave a bit of relaxation or simply want to get away. A whole host of health articles and experts seem to lecture us all on the need to take a little bit of me time and put our needs ahead of others, but that is something that is incredibly easier said than done.

We all now know that yoga can change our lives, help us lose weight, and rid us of stress, but there are so many difficult questions that follow. How do we start? Where do we sign up for a class? What do we wear to yoga class? Who the heck has the time in the day to spend an hour or two stretching and breathing?

Well cast all those questions aside because it is actually a lot easier than you think.

You can find quick and easy refuge from the outside world in just a few moments, and here is some information that will make it easier than imagined. Following are 5 simple yoga stretches and exercises that you can do, anytime and anyplace, to make a bad situation a little better, get away from it all, or just take advantage of some simple relaxation. Do them in a closet, do them in your bedroom, or even do them in a public restroom. They really are that easy.

Simple Yoga Stretch #1- Forward Bend

Sit down on any surface, such as a toilet seat, and sit as straight upright as possible. Breathe in deeply and then as you exhale slowly bend your torso towards your thighs. Bend all the way down so that your head is rested on your knees and let your arms hang loosely at your sides.

Simply Yoga Stretch #2-Neck Rolls

While you are still seated comfortably place your hands on your thighs and drop your head so that your chin is touching your upper chest. Relax your shoulders and roll your head slowly all the way to the right and then all the way to the left. The key is to stay loose and make your movements as smooth as possible.

Simple Yoga Stretch #3- Side Twists

Sit up as straight as possible and turn your whole upper body to the right as far as you can without moving your legs. Reach back and hold onto something in order to stretch your body even further. Breathe in and out deeply and then switch over to the left side and do the exact same thing.

Simple Yoga Stretch #4- Upward Stretch

Now you are done sitting down and can stand up. As you inhale stretch your arms over your head and grip your hands together. Turn your hands so that your palms are facing the ceiling and look upwards. Stretch as far as you can while breathing deeply in and out a few times and then release.

Simple Yoga Stretch #5- Screaming Stretch

Open your mouth as wide as you possibly can. Inhale your breath very slowly and then exhale as fast as you can. As you exhale forcefully picture all of your stress, worry or even boredom escape your body. Repeat this three times or until you feel ready to go back out and socialize, get back to work, or just go about your day.

The 5 simply yoga stretches that you can do anywhere may seem too easy or even too good to be true, but that isn’t the case. After this short spurt of yoga you will feel relaxed, rejuvenated, refreshed and ready to take on the outside world. If things start getting to you during the day just lock yourself in a room or excuse yourself to go to the bathroom.

The trip will be well worth it.

• Apple Juice must contain 100% juice and be made directly from apples or apple juice concentrate that has had the water put back in it
