Understand your Dreams with a Dream Journal

Each one of us has dreams while we sleep, whether we remember them or not. With the exception of those who take sleeping aids which may interrupt the dreaming process, we all experience fairly frequent dreams if our rest is adequate, and sometimes even when it is not. While dreams are sometimes shooed away as nonsense that our minds come up with, many people believe that dreams can actually offer a lot to those who take the time to examine them for their own personal benefit. The concept is simple: while you are sleeping, your brain is working through problems and situations that you experienced while awake. This is an incredibly powerful way for your brain to provide solutions or make insightful comments that you will remember when you wake up.

What confuses most people is the fact that dreams are rarely literal, being more similar to abstract paintings or poetry, maybe even surreal art house cinema. This is because the images, words and moods conveyed in dreams are often symbolic, tied to things they represent. One of the best ways to begin making sense of what your dreams are telling you is by keeping a dream journal. All you need is a notebook and a pen kept near your bed, though some people prefer to have a tape recorder or use their cellphones to send themselves a text message or record a voice note. Once you begin recording the events, situations, and moods of your dreams, you will begin to recognize patterns and understand that you already have your own personal dream language that has been developing over the course of your life.

Analyzing Dreams by Thinking Backwards

While recording what you dream is crucial, it's important not to wake up and immediately begin recording everything. This may cause you to end up losing what you remember in your rush to write down the details. First, stay very still and try to remember everything you can. Some people suggest 'thinking backwards' by remembering one detail and then trying to fish for the memories that surround this detail. If you keep pushing yourself, you will eventually find that there is usually some sort of story told in fragments. By writing down the fragments you are able to recall, you may be able to trigger more memory throughout the course of the day.

There May be Meaning but it is Still Just a Dream

In examining your dreams, remember not to take things too terribly literally unless you feel strongly that they are literal. If you see a person or thing, or experience a specific mood, ask yourself what this might be related to in your waking life. By seeing these connections you will often discover that you've come up with explanations for feelings you have about people or situations while you were sleeping.

Understand your Feelings with a Dream Journal

It is important to break out of the closed mind that you might have when it comes to dream analysis. Keeping a dream journal does not mean that you are overly sensitive and doesn’t even need to be a form of therapy, which some people define it as. A dream journal can simply be a way to connect better with your inner self and your feelings. You do not have to make any changes based on what your dreams say or even read too far into their deeper meaning. Instead, you can treat your dream analysis simply as a way of acknowledging who you are and how you feel. The more you work on your dream journal, the more you will learn about your most valuable asset in life: yourself.

  1. Thank you for this information, this site is very good. I have found good information.

  2. Thanks for the distinct tips shared on this website. I have observed that many insurance companies offer buyers generous reductions if they favor to insure multiple cars with them. A significant number of households include several cars or trucks these days, in particular those with older teenage kids still dwelling at home, along with the savings with policies can easily soon increase. So it pays off to look for a bargain.
